In the era of Digital Journalism, it is important to know how to verify user generated contents(UGC) and their geographic locations. Here are my verification steps of some examples. Hope they can be tips for you. If you have any more efficient ways to verify contents, please share with me!
location: 22°16’48.7″N 114°09’58.8”E outside Central Government Offices, Hong Kong
-put mouse on the time and get the exact date of publication: 23 Sept 2014
-search key words: “23 Sept 2014”+”admiralty”+”student strike” on google and find the news published on South China Morning Post
-confirm what happened at that time and find the location is near “Tamar Park, outside government headquarters in Admiralty”
-search the key words of location into google map and find a photo sphere
-confirm it is the same place in the instagram and find its exact geographic location by right click
location: Av. Salvador 364, Providencia, Región Metropolitana, Chile
-put mouse on the time and get the exact date of publication: 3 April 2014
-search former instagram of the user Jorge Contreras Monads and find a picture from a similar angle
-zoom in and find “Hospital del Salvador” on the building
-search “Hospital del Salvador” into google map and find similar pictures and streets
-find the location of the hospital: Av. Salvador 364, Providencia, Región Metropolitana, Chile
-search “Av. Salvador 364, Providencia, Región Metropolitana, Chile” into google map and find photo sphere
-find street view-Apr 2014 and verify it is the exact location
-find the exact date of publication: 15 Sept 2014 and the description on youtube: Poplava Tekija
-search “Poplava Tekija” into google translate and find Poplava means flood and Tekija is a village in Serbia
-search key words “Tekija flood” on google and verify there was a raging flash flood in Tekija, Serbia on September, 2014
-since there isn’t street view of Tekija, Serbia on google map, I search “Tekija flood” on google images and find the same screen shot of this youtube video as well as a news report of a local medium who used this video with credit (reconfirm what happened there)
-also find google earth pictures of the exact location of Tekija on google images
- one UGC video:
Since I want to shoot a video about street arts in Hong Kong, I search key words “street art Hong Kong” on youtube, and I find this UGC video.
The video shows a road sign. After zooming in, I find it is named “east point road”. So I search it on google map and find a street view of E point Rd. And the store logo of Bauhaus behind the singer helps me to identify the the exact location.
